An annual weed of the grass family (APG classification: Poaceae). Also called cat hawkweed. The culms are sparse and 20-70 cm tall. The edges of the leaf sheaths are hairy. From August to October, the plant produces cylindrical inflorescences 2-5 cm long at the top, pale green or purple, with hairs on the central axis. The spikelets are about 2 mm long. The fourth glume has unclear horizontal wrinkles, tiny dots, and is surrounded by the second glume. It is commonly found in wastelands and fields throughout Japan, and is widely distributed in Asia. It is considered to be the original species of foxtail millet. It was named after the inflorescence, which resembles the tail of a small dog. The variety Hamaenocoro that grows on the coast and has short inflorescences is called Hamaenocoro. A similar species is the autumn foxtail, which has spikelets 3 mm long and an exposed fourth lemma. The golden foxtail has hairless leaf sheaths, horizontal wrinkles in the fourth lemma, and slightly larger spikelets, about 3 mm long.
