A climbing shrub of the Apocynaceae family found in warm regions of Japan; the stems of large trees can reach a diameter of 12 cm (illustration). The bark is dark purple, milky, and completely hairless. The leaves are opposite, oblong-oblanceolate or oblong, 5-10 cm long, soft, leathery, evergreen, pointed at both ends, with widely spaced lateral veins, dark green glossy upper surface, and pale green underside. The flowers are terminal cones, small, yellow-green, and numerous, in cymes 7-8 cm in diameter. The corolla is high-tray 8-10 mm in diameter, thin tubular at the bottom, and flat-open with 5 lobes at the top, with scaly white hairs growing on the inner surface along with the tubular part.
