James Agee

American novelist and journalist. Born in Tennessee, he graduated from Harvard University. His most famous work is the non-fiction book Honoring Famous People Now, which is an experiential account of the lives of southern farmers during the depression. It was rejected by magazines, but was published in book form in 1941 with photographs by W. Evans. He wrote two full-length novels, including Death in the Family (1957), which depicts the sudden misfortune that befalls a southern family. He was also active as a film critic in the 1930s and 1940s, and wrote screenplays for films such as The African Queen (1951).

アメリカの小説家，ジャーナリスト。テネシー州生れ，ハーバード大学卒業。代表作は，不況下の南部農民の生活を体験的に報告したノンフィクション《今有名人をたたえよう》で，雑誌には掲載を断られるが，1941年W.エバンズの写真と共に単行本として出版された。小説は長編が2編あり，南部の家族に突然訪れる不幸を描く《家族の中の死》(1957)がすぐれている。また，映画批評においては1930,40年代に活躍，《アフリカの女王》(1951)などの映画脚本も書いた。
