…Extant species are classified mainly on the basis of differences in skeletal features such as the skull, vertebrae, and pectoral girdle, as well as external characteristics, with approximately 2,600 species divided into 22 families. They are broadly divided into relatively primitive groups (suborder Anura) and relatively new groups (suborder Anura). The suborder Anura includes the Leiopelmatidae of New Zealand, which retain only vestigial tail muscles in adults, and the Ascaphidae of the northwestern United States.
