A peninsula jutting out into the Sea of Japan in the center of Akita Prefecture. Ojikajima used to face the mainland across a strait, but the cargo carried by the Yoneshiro River in the north and the Omono River in the south, along with sediment discharged from the island, gradually grew into sandbars and dunes that connected the island on both the north and south sides, forming a torishima that embraces Lagoon Hachirogata. Made of Tertiary layers, the island has developed into a coastal terrace with about 13 levels, on which the Honzan volcanic group in the west and the Kanpuzan volcano in the east stand. Honzan is the highest peak on the peninsula, at 715 meters above sea level. It is a troide type made of biotite rhyolite. There are two volcanoes, Shinzan to the north and Kenashiyama to the south, and the area is covered with beautiful cedar forests. The maar groups of Ichinomegata, Ninomegata, and Sannomegata, which were formed by the same volcanic activity, are located near the northwest coast, and Toga Bay is said to have formed when two maars were submerged by marine erosion. Kanpusan is 355 meters above sea level. It is a double volcano made of pyroxene andesite, and its body is an aspithetroide type. Stone known as Kanpuseki is excavated from the surrounding foothills and used for stone walls and gravestones. The west coast is a fault coast made of tuff and agglomerate, and from Nyudozaki in the north to Monzen in the south, the landscape features sea caves, natural bridges, and strangely shaped rocks. Kanpusan, Motoyama, and the west coast are beautifully scenic and have been designated as Oga Quasi-National Park. [Reijiro Miyazaki] [References] | | |Oga Quasi-National Park.
