Servants of India Society

He joined the Congress Party and served as chairman of its annual conference in 1905, but as a representative of the moderate pro-British group, he came into conflict with the radical nationalists led by Tilak. In the same year, he founded the Servants of India Society in Pune, with the aim of educational and social reform. He supported Gandhi's struggle in South Africa and often gave him advice.
