A city in central Kanagawa Prefecture, located at the southeastern foot of the Tanzawa Mountains. It was incorporated as a city in 1971. The city center developed as a post town and market town for pilgrims to Mt. Oyama. In the early Showa period, the Odakyu Electric Railway came through the city, and the area developed into residential areas, attracting many people commuting to Tokyo.
