A research institute affiliated with the University of London, especially renowned for its Renaissance studies. A wealthy German art historian, A. Warburg, had a particular interest in the traditions of ancient art, and in 1905 established a library with an extensive collection of books on the subject in Hamburg. It eventually developed into a research institute (1921) with his friend F. Saxl as its director, and with such figures as Panofsky and Cassirer becoming associated with the institute, it came to be regarded as a major center for Renaissance studies.
