Swiss pastor and author. Along with the "northern sage" Herman, he is known as a "sage from the south." He is known for his research into physiognomy, which he conceived with inspiration from Goethe, Swedenborg, and others. He was also a man of faith who preached piety and mysticism in the century of enlightenment.
