Born March 11, 1931. Melbourne, Victoria. CEO of News Corporation (America's third largest media conglomerate). Owner of film company 20th Century Fox, publishing company HarperCollins, The Times of London, and British Sky Broadcasting. Studied politics and economics at Worcester College, Oxford, and entered journalism after working as an editor for the Beaverbrook Daily Express. Returning to Australia in 1954, he devoted himself to managing two newspapers, The News and The Sunday Mail in Adelaide, which he inherited from his father, as well as a radio station in the mining town of Broken Hill. After a string of flashy headlines and acquisitions, he launched Australia's first national newspaper, The Australian, in 1964. He expanded into foreign media, first acquiring the News of the World, a long-established tabloid Sunday newspaper popular among the working class in England, and then The Sun in 1969. He doubled circulation within a year by focusing on sex, sports, and crime articles. In 1970, he acquired partial ownership of London Weekend Television, which gave him a foothold in British broadcasting, which developed into the satellite broadcasting service Sky Television. He also expanded into North America by acquiring the San Antonio News and Express, and in 1976 he moved to New York, where he acquired the oldest daily newspaper in the United States, the New York Post, as well as the Village Voice, New York Magazine, and New West. In 1985, he acquired six Metromedia television stations, and obtained American citizenship to avoid violating the law that prohibited non-citizens from owning more than 20% of television stations. In 1987, 20th Century Fox and Metromedia were combined to form Fox Television Network, which built a huge broadcasting empire with about 100 independent stations participating as sister stations. News Corporation then acquired Triangle Publications, publisher of TV Guide and Seventeen, making it the third largest media conglomerate after Time Warner and Gannett. In 1991, News Corporation sold nine publications, including New York Magazine, Seventeen, and Racing Form to KIII Holdings, but continues to have influence through investments in newspapers in Hong Kong and Hungary. In 1998, News Corporation entered the sports business by acquiring the Los Angeles Dodgers, a major league baseball team.

Murdoch, Dame Jean Iris

Born: July 15, 1919, Dublin
[Died] February 8, 1999. Oxford English female writer. Wife of writer J. Baillie. Studied at both Oxford and Cambridge, and lectured in philosophy at Oxford. After Sartre, Romantic Rationalist (1953), she devoted herself to writing, releasing a succession of works, including Under the Net (54), The Flight from the Enchanter (56), The Sandcastle (57), The Bell (58), and The Unicorn (63). In the 1970s, she was particularly active, producing one work a year, including The Black Prince (73) and The Sacred and Profane Love Machine (74). He is one of the leading contemporary British novelists, dealing with issues such as fantasy and reality, freedom and responsibility, and the natural and the unnatural, often displaying a metaphysical tendency but without any hint of idealism. In 1978, he won the Booker Prize for The Sea, The Sea.

Died November 15, 1839, Birmingham. British inventor. In 1777, he was employed by M. Boulton and J. Watt to work at the Soho Works in Birmingham. Two years later, he was transferred to Cornwall to supervise the design and installation of the Watt steam engine. During this time, he continued to experiment with coal carbonization in Redruth, and in 1892, he succeeded in lighting a steam engine with coal gas. After returning to Birmingham in 1899, he improved the method of refining and storing coal gas and put it to practical use. In 1802, to celebrate the Treaty of Amiens, gas lamps were installed on the exterior of the Soho Works, and gas lamps were installed permanently inside the factory. In 1807, gas lamps were used for street lighting in London, and the era of gas lighting continued for about a century until Edison invented the electric light (1879). He also made important inventions in improving the steam engine, such as the D-shaped slide valve and the planetary gear mechanism. He is also known for inventing the steam gun (03).

[Died] October 30, 1921. Baulkham Hills, Australia. British Japanologist. He was an assistant professor of Greek at Aberdeen University, but moved to Australia due to heart disease. He taught middle schools in Western Australia and Queensland. In 1888, he covered the coolie issue in Hong Kong for a major Sydney newspaper. In 1889, he visited Japan and covered the coal mining situation in Kyushu, writing articles for the Japan Gazette. He was a teacher at Nakatsu Middle School, and then a lecturer at the First Senior High School (1889-93). He later returned to Japan and taught at the Fourth Senior High School and the Seventh Senior High School. During this time, he studied Japanese history with the help of Yamagata Isoo, and became a professor of Japanese studies at the University of Melbourne. His books include A History of Japan (3 volumes, 1903-25).

[Died] March 29, 1985. Born in Devon, Pennsylvania. American cultural anthropologist. Earned his PhD from Yale University. Professor at the University of Pittsburgh from 1960 to 1973. Conducted field surveys of American Indians, Micronesians, and others, and attempted to systematize general laws of human behavior through cross-cultural research. His major works include Social Structure (1949), which presented the concept of the nuclear family, and Ethnographic Atlas (1967), which classified and compared ethnographic materials from around the world. In 1962, he also founded and edited the ethnological journal Ethnology.

Born January 25, 1811 in Philadelphia
[Died] May 19, 1893. Born in Cincinnati. An American actor. He was known for his excellent delivery and was popular for his comedic roles. His best roles included Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing and Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet. In 1832, he accidentally took arsenic and became ill, but he continued to perform on stage. He retired from the stage in 1858, and from 1861 onwards he devoted himself to reading and lecturing.

イギリスの発明家。 1777年 M.ボールトンと J.ワットに雇われて，バーミンガムのソホー工場で働いた。2年後コーンウォールに移されて，ワット蒸気機関の設計，据付けの監督をした。その頃レッドルースで石炭乾留の実験を続け，92年石炭ガスで点灯することに成功。 99年バーミンガムに帰ってからは石炭ガスの精製，貯蔵法を改良して実用化した。 1802年アミアンの和約を祝ってソホー工場の外面をガス灯で照し，工場内にもガス灯を常設した。 07年ガス灯はロンドンの街路灯に用いられ，エジソンが電灯を発明する (1879) まで約1世紀にわたってガス灯の時代が続いた。また蒸気機関の改良についても，D字形スライドバルブ，遊星歯車機構など重要な発明を行なった。ほかに蒸気銃の発明 (03) も知られている。

イギリスの日本研究家。アバディーン大学のギリシア語助教授だったが，胸を病んでオーストラリアに移り，ウェスタンオーストラリア州とクイーンズランド州で中学校教師をし，1888年シドニーの有力新聞社のためにホンコンでクーリー（苦力）問題の取材活動にあたり，1889年訪日して九州の炭鉱事情を取材して『ジャパン・ガゼット』に寄稿。中津中学校教師，次いで第一高等学校講師（1889～93）を務めた。のち再び訪日して第四高等学校，第七高等学校の講師を歴任。この間，山県五十雄の協力で日本歴史の研究に従事し，メルボルン大学日本学教授となった。著書に『日本史』A History of Japan（3巻，1903～25）などがある。

アメリカの文化人類学者。エール大学で博士号を取得。 1960～73年ピッツバーグ大学教授。アメリカインディアン，ミクロネシア人などの現地調査を行い，通文化調査により人間行動の一般的法則の体系化に努めた。主著に，核家族の概念を提示した『社会構造』 Social Structure (1949) ，世界の民族誌的資料を分類，比較した"Ethnographic Atlas" (67) など。また 62年には民族学雑誌"Ethnology"を創刊，その編集を行なった。

アメリカの俳優。せりふ回しにすぐれ，喜劇で人気を集めた。当り役は『から騒ぎ』のベネディック，『ロミオとジュリエット』のマキューシオなど。 1832年に誤ってヒ素を服用し，以来病身となるがその後も舞台活動を続けた。 58年に舞台を引退し，61年以後は朗読と講演活動に専念した。
