A dynasty established by an Iranian tribe in the upper reaches of the Amu River in Central Asia from the 1st to 5th centuries. In Chinese history books, it is called Guishang and was established in the latter half of the 1st century BCE by Kujula Kadphises I, who conquered the Bactrian region. During the time of his son Wima Kadphises, the kingdom expanded into the Indus River basin and the areas to the east. Later, King Kanishka emerged and brought the kingdom to its heyday. Its territory extended from West Turkistan and Afghanistan to parts of East Turkistan and India, with its capital at Purushapura (present-day Peshawar). Mahayana Buddhism and Gandharan art were developed under this dynasty. When the Sassanid Empire was established in the west in the 3rd century, the dynasty became subordinate to it, and was destroyed by the Hephthalites in the 5th century.
