Japanese: 読み書きそろばん(読み書き算盤) - よみかきそろばん

Reading letters and sentences, understanding their contents and writing sentences, and calculating, as well as the ability to do all of these. Especially since the end of the early modern period, it has been considered a basic educational content in elementary education, and refers to the basic abilities and academic skills that students should acquire in elementary education. It is also called reading, writing, and arithmetic, but in Japan from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period, calculations were mainly done with an abacus, so it was called "reading, writing, and arithmetic." In English, it is called the "three R's" (the three words reading, writing, and arithmetic, which represent reading, writing, and arithmetic, all contain an R, so it is called the 3R's).

文字･文章を読むこと，内容を理解して文章を書くこと，および計算すること，ならびにそれらができる能力をもっていること。とくに近世末期以降，初等教育における基本的な教育内容とされ，また初等教育で獲得させる基礎的な能力･学力をいう。読み書き算ともいうが，日本では幕末から明治にかけ，計算は主としてそろばんで行ったので，これを〈読み書きそろばん〉といってきた。英語では，これに〈スリーアールズ〉(読み･書き･算を表すreading,writing,arithmeticの3語にRがあるので，3R’sという)の語をあてる。
