The third oldest in the United States, it was founded in 1701 by Congregationalist ministers, but in 1718 it was renamed Yale College after Elihu Yale (1649-1721), who made a huge donation to the struggling university. In 1847, it established the first doctoral program in the United States. It established a graduate school with a clear separation between undergraduate and graduate programs, and became a model for other universities' graduate schools based on the Yale model. …
