A historical region in northern Poland roughly corresponding to the present Elbląg and Olsztyn Voivodeships, which was part of East Prussia before World War II. Formerly known as Ermland in German, it lies in the basin of the north-flowing Wina and Paszęka rivers, and borders the Masurian Lake Region to the east. It is one of Poland's economically underdeveloped regions, and the glacial topography makes the soil poor and unsuitable for farming. In the 8th century, Slavic peoples inhabited the area. In 1243, it came under the control of the Teutonic Knights, and many Germans immigrated to the area, but Ermland maintained its own bishopric.
