Japanese: 形状偏差 - けいじょうへんさ（英語表記）form deviation

Although machined parts come in a variety of shapes, most are composed of straight lines and circles. This is based on the constraints of ease of machining, as linear and rotational motion can be easily achieved and is highly accurate. Deviations in the shape of the workpiece occur mainly due to fluctuations in the motions of the machine tool during processing. These deviations become a problem when the parts are assembled to fulfill their functions and maintain interchangeability. Shape deviation is the deviation of a single feature, such as the lines or surfaces that form a machine part, when viewed in isolation.

機械で加工された部品の形にはいろいろのものがあるが，直線と円とで構成されているものが多い。それは，工作の容易さの制限に基づくもので，直線運動と回転運動とが容易に実現でき，かつ精度がよいからである。加工中の主として工作機械のそれらの運動の変動によって工作物の形に狂いが生ずる。その狂いは部品として組み立てられ，機能を満たし，かつ互換性を保つときに問題となる。機械部品を形成する線，面など，その形体そのものを単独にみる単独形体の狂いが形状偏差である。
