An expressway that runs along the Sea of Japan in the Hokuriku region. Starting in Niigata City, it passes through Nagaoka City and Joetsu City in Niigata Prefecture, passing the steep coastal areas of Oyashirazu and Koshirazu, passing through Toyama Prefecture, Ishikawa Prefecture, and Fukui Prefecture, before connecting to the Meishin Expressway at its terminus in Maibara City, Shiga Prefecture. It is 487 kilometers long and was made into a four-lane expressway in 2000. At its starting point in Niigata City, it connects to the Tohoku Transverse Expressway Iwaki Niigata Line (Ban'etsu Expressway) and the Nihonkai Tohoku Expressway, and on the way, it connects to the Kan'etsu Expressway in Nagaoka City and Joetsu City, the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway in Oyabe City, Toyama Prefecture, and the Kinki Expressway Tsuruga Line (not yet connected as of July 2012) in Tsuruga City, Fukui Prefecture. This road not only eases congestion on the parallel National Route 8, but also shortens the travel time between major cities in the Hokuriku region and the Hanshin and Chukyo areas, playing a major role in promoting various industries. It also serves as a lifeline for the snowy country, providing a stable supply of goods even during heavy snowfalls in winter. The first section opened in 1972, between Kanazawa City and Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture. The first full line opened in 1988 with the opening of the Asahi-Nadachitanihama section, but the route was later partially reorganized, and in 1997 the Niigata Kameda-Niigata Airport section was opened, completing the 487 km stretch between Niigata City and Maibara City. Initially, the section between Niigata Chuo and Niigata Airport was also called the Hokuriku Expressway, but with the opening of the route north of Niigata Airport in 2002, the section north of Niigata Chuo Junction was renamed the Nihonkai Tohoku Expressway. The section between Niigata City (Niigata Chuo Junction) and Asahi Town, Toyama Prefecture (Asahi Interchange) is managed by East Nippon Expressway Co., Ltd., and the section between Asahi Town and Maibara City (Maibara Junction) is managed by Central Nippon Expressway Co., Ltd.
