1846‐1904 French republican politician. After working as a lawyer, he became a member of the House of Representatives in 1879, and served as Minister of the Interior from 1881 to 1885, enacting the Trade Unions Law in 1884, officially recognizing labor unions. He became a senator in 1894. In order to resolve the political crisis following the Dreyfus Affair, he formed the "Defence of the Republic" cabinet in 1899, and became both Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior. He suppressed right-wing nationalists, and in 1901 he enacted the Law of Associations, paving the way for the realization of a law separating church and state.
