Shimane Peninsula

A peninsula facing the Sea of ​​Japan in northeastern Shimane Prefecture. It is made up of Tertiary period folded strata and faults, with three land masses arranged in a staggered pattern, and deformation due to volcanic activity can be seen in various places. Firstly, there is the Western Land Mass (Kitayama Land Mass) which slopes gently from the west to the north and forms a steep cliff to the south, the Central Land Mass (Jurokushima Land Mass) which has a steep cliff to the north and a gentle slope to the south, and the Eastern Land Mass (Makuragi Mountains Land Mass) which has a steep cliff to the south and slopes gently to the north. It stretches 65km from Jizozaki in the east to Hinomisaki in the west, stretches 15-20km from north to south, and is a long, narrow hilly area with an elevation of 250-500m. It is connected to the mainland in the south by the Shinji lowlands, and is connected to the Nogi Plain, Lake Nakaumi, Matsue Plain, Lake Shinji, and Izumo Plain. The area from Jizozaki on the north coast of the peninsula to Kaganokukedo and Hinomisaki are part of the Daisen-Oki National Park, and the Shinjiko Kitayama Prefectural Natural Park has many scenic spots such as Mt. Makuragi (Kezoji Temple), Ichibata Yakushi, and Gakuenji. Izumo Taisha Shrine, located at the westernmost tip of the peninsula, is the Ichinomiya Shrine of Izumo, dedicated to Okuninushi-no-Mikoto, the god of fortune and matchmaking, and has many worshippers throughout the country. In addition, the coast facing the Sea of ​​Japan has ria bay ports such as Etomo, Katae, and Shichirui.

島根県北東部、日本海に臨む半島。第三紀の褶曲(しゅうきょく)地層群と断層からなり、三つの地塊が雁行(がんこう)状に配列し、火成活動による変形が各所にみられる。まず西のほうから北に緩く傾斜し南に急崖(きゅうがい)をなしている西部地塊（北山地塊）、北側が急崖で南に緩い中部地塊（十六島(うっぷるい)地塊）、南側が急崖で北に緩く傾斜する東部地塊（枕木(まくらぎ)山地塊）からなる。東端の地蔵崎(じぞうさき)から西端の日御碕(ひのみさき)まで延長65キロメートル、南北15～20キロメートル、標高250～500メートルの狭長な丘陵地をなし、南部の本土とは宍道(しんじ)低地帯で接続し、能義(のぎ)平野、中海(なかうみ)、松江平野、宍道湖、出雲(いずも)平野と連なっている。半島北岸の地蔵崎から加賀ノ潜戸(かがのくけど)にかけての地域や日御碕は大山隠岐(だいせんおき)国立公園の一部であり、また宍道湖北山(きたやま)県立自然公園域には枕木(まくらぎ)山（華蔵寺(けぞうじ)）、一畑薬師(いちばたやくし)、鰐淵寺(がくえんじ)などの名勝が多い。半島最西端にある出雲大社は大国主命(おおくにぬしのみこと)を祭神とする出雲の一宮(いちのみや)で、福の神、縁結びの神として全国に多くの崇敬者をもっている。なお、日本海に面した海岸には恵曇(えとも)、片江、七類(しちるい)などのリアス式湾港がある。
