Fribourg - Fribourg (English spelling)

The capital of the canton of Fribourg in western Switzerland. Population 32,096 (2001). German name Freiburg. Since its foundation, the border between the French and German regions has passed through the town, and about a quarter of the residents speak German. Founded in 1157 as a fortified city overlooking the Saline River, it is one of the oldest cities in Switzerland. In addition to the brewing industry that began in the 18th century, the town is now home to industries such as food, aluminum, electrical equipment, photochemicals, and paper products. More than being an industrial center, the town is also the center of Catholicism in the country, and is home to a comprehensive university (opened in 1889) that is closely related to the university, and its theology faculty (founded in 1580) is particularly famous worldwide. The Cathedral of Saint-Nicolas, whose construction began in 1283, is a masterpiece of the Gothic style and is worth seeing.

The canton of Fribourg has an area of ​​1,671 km2 and a population of 239,100 (2001). It is a typical dairy region in Switzerland and is famous for its Gruyère cheese.

スイス西部、フリブール州の州都。人口3万2096（2001）。ドイツ語名フライブルクFreiburg。町の創設以来、フランス語地域とドイツ語地域の境界がこの町を通り、市民の約4分の1はドイツ語を話す。サリーヌ川に臨む要塞(ようさい)都市として、すでに1157年に立地し、スイスのなかでも古都のおもかげをよくとどめている町である。18世紀からの醸造業に加えて、現在は食料品、アルミニウム、電気機器、写真化学、紙製品などの工業が盛んである。この町は工業の中心以上にカトリックの国内の中心であり、これと関係の深い総合大学（1889開設）の所在地で、とくにその神学部（1580創設）は世界的に有名である。また、1283年に建設が始まったサン・ニコラ大聖堂はゴシック様式の傑作として一見の価値がある。

　フリブール州は面積1671平方キロメートル、人口23万9100（2001）。スイスの典型的な酪農地域で、グリュイエールのチーズが有名である。
