The capital of the canton of Fribourg in western Switzerland. Population 32,096 (2001). German name Freiburg. Since its foundation, the border between the French and German regions has passed through the town, and about a quarter of the residents speak German. Founded in 1157 as a fortified city overlooking the Saline River, it is one of the oldest cities in Switzerland. In addition to the brewing industry that began in the 18th century, the town is now home to industries such as food, aluminum, electrical equipment, photochemicals, and paper products. More than being an industrial center, the town is also the center of Catholicism in the country, and is home to a comprehensive university (opened in 1889) that is closely related to the university, and its theology faculty (founded in 1580) is particularly famous worldwide. The Cathedral of Saint-Nicolas, whose construction began in 1283, is a masterpiece of the Gothic style and is worth seeing. The canton of Fribourg has an area of 1,671 km2 and a population of 239,100 (2001). It is a typical dairy region in Switzerland and is famous for its Gruyère cheese.
