Latvian chemist. He entered Riga Technical University and began research in electrochemistry under FW Ostwald, but after Ostwald moved to the University of Leipzig, he became assistant to CA Bishop and studied organic chemistry. He served as a professor at Riga Technical University and the first rector of the Latvian University of Riga, and after the revolution he went to Germany and became a professor at the University of Rostock (1919). During World War II, he moved to Frankfurt am Main and became a visiting professor at the University of Tübingen (1947), where he lectured on the history of chemistry until he was 90 years old.

ラトビアの化学者。リガ工業大学に入り，F.W.オストワルトのもとで電気化学の研究を始めたが，オストワルトがライプチヒ大学へ移った後，C.A.ビショップの助手となり有機化学を研究した。リガ工業大学教授，リガのラトビア大学初代学長を務めたのち，革命後，ドイツに行きロストク大学教授となる(1919)。第2次大戦中フランクフルト･アム･マインに移住し，チュービンゲン大学客員教授となり(1947)，そこで90歳まで化学史の講義をした。
