The first Vice Provincial of the Society of Jesus in Japan. Born in Portugal. He joined the Society in India in 1556 and came to Japan in 1572 (Genki 3). He later served as the district superior of Shimo, one of the three missionary districts in Japan, and in 1581 (Tensho 9) was appointed Vice Provincial of Japan by Visitor Valignano. In 1586 he visited Toyotomi Hideyoshi at Osaka Castle, and the following year he went to Hakata to celebrate his triumphant return from his conquest of Kyushu, but was confronted with the edict to expel the missionaries, and held a missionary conference in Hirado to discuss how to proceed. He was known for his reckless actions, such as requesting that troops be sent to Japan from Manila.

イエズス会の初代日本準管区長。ポルトガル出身。1556年インドで入会し72年(元亀3)来日。のち日本三布教区の一つである下（しも）の地区長を務め，81年(天正9)巡察師バリニャーノにより日本準管区長に任命された。86年大坂城に豊臣秀吉を訪ね，翌年彼の九州征伐の凱旋を祝って博多に赴いたが伴天連追放令を突きつけられ，平戸で善後策協議のため宣教師会議を開いた。マニラへ日本派兵を要請するなどの軽挙が目だった。
