Wayang

Japanese: ワヤン
Wayang
Originally meaning "shadow," the name refers to the Javanese shadow puppet theatre (wayang kulit) and the puppets used in it, but it also refers to many other types of theatre. Kulit means "leather," and the name wayang kulit comes from the puppets used in the theatre, which are made from tanned and coloured buffalo hide. A puppeteer called a dalang manipulates dozens of puppets one after another, telling a tale that incorporates elements of improvisation, and also giving instructions to the accompanying gamelan. Adaptations of the ancient Indian epics Ramayana and Mahabharata, which were introduced to Java around the 10th century, and stories based on mythology are performed. Originally closely linked to religious ceremonies, it now has a strong entertainment element.
