Sakazaki Bin

Year of birth: November 18, 1853 (December 18, 1853)
A journalist from the Meiji period. His first name was Kenji, and later Bin. His pen names included Shiran. He was born in Edo at the residence of the Tosa clan as the second son of the doctor Koun and his wife Kisako. In 1874 (Meiji 7), he joined the Patriotic Public Party. After that, he made a name for himself as a debater for the Liberal Party, writing for newspapers affiliated with the Liberal Party such as the Kochi Shimbun, Doyo Shimbun, and Jiyuto, and gained a reputation as a debater for the Liberal Rights movement. When political speeches were banned, he took on the name Bakabayashi Don'o and lectured on civil rights. He was also known for translating Victor Hugo's novels, and wrote books such as Mutsu Munemitsu (1898). In his later years, he served as an editor for the Restoration History Compilation Office. 明治時代のジャーナリスト。最初の名は謙次,後に斌。号は紫瀾など。江戸の土佐藩邸に医師耕雲,妻きさ子の次男として生まれる。明治7(1874)年愛国公党に参加する。以後,『高知新聞』『土陽新聞』『自由灯』などの自由党系の諸新聞で論陣を張り,自由民権派の論客としての名を高めた。政談演説が禁止されると馬鹿林鈍翁と名乗り,民権講釈を行うという一面もあった。ビクトル・ユゴーの小説の翻訳などでも知られ,『陸奥宗光』(1898)などの著書がある。晩年は維新史料編纂事務局編纂員を務めた。女権拡張論者の一面もあった。<参考文献>野崎左文「坂崎紫瀾翁の伝」(『明治文化研究』3巻9号)
