A special corporation established in 1985 when the former Japan Tobacco and Salt Public Corporation was privatized after the abolition of the tobacco monopoly. Abbreviated as JT. It had a monopoly on domestic tobacco manufacturing and inherited the salt monopoly, but the salt monopoly was abolished at the end of 1996. In 1999, it acquired all of RJR Nabisco's overseas tobacco businesses outside the United States, becoming the world's third largest tobacco company. In 2007, it acquired the world's fifth largest tobacco company, Gallaher, for a total of approximately 7.5 billion pounds. While expanding its tobacco business overseas, it is also diversifying into medical and food products. Head office in Tokyo, factories in northern Kanto (Tochigi), Kansai (Kyoto), and 14 others.
