Born: February 21, 1921, Baltimore, Maryland [Died] November 24, 2002. Lexington, Massachusetts. American social philosopher. In his book A Theory of Justice (1971), he reinstated the tradition of social contract theory in place of utilitarianism, which had been dominant in the UK and the US, and attempted to answer the question of the foundation of social justice as a balance between freedom and equality, which caused a great stir. This work became the source of lively discussion thereafter. He studied at Princeton and Cornell universities, and after graduating from Cornell University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he became a professor of philosophy at Harvard University in 1962. In 1974, he became president of the American Philosophical Association. Rolls |
