In the Kansai dialect, it means something foolish or a clown. It also refers to the clown role or comical scene (chari-ba) in Bunraku puppet theatre and Kabuki. The origin of the word is said to be a corruption of the word "chari-ba" (a play performed by a priest in Tsuruoka), which was first performed at the Toyotakeza Theater in Osaka in 1736 (Genbun 1) and featured a comical narrator, Ajiyari, from Tsuruoka, who pretended to be wounded to deceive his enemies. However, it is more likely to be related to words such as "to make fun of" and "to play around with." The character "sari" is also sometimes used.
