It has long been known that herbal medicines such as the leaves of the Scrophulariaceae plant, the seeds of the Apocynaceae plant Strophanthus, and the sea leek ( Urginea maritima Baker) of the Liliaceae family have a cardiotonic effect. It is said that the leaves of digitalis as a cardiotonic drug were already listed in the London Pharmacopoeia in the 17th century, and Strophanthus was introduced during Livingstone's African exploration in 1860.
