A decapod crustacean of the spider crab family (illustration). This crab is found widely from Tokyo Bay to the Indian Ocean, living on muddy sandy bottoms at depths of 20 to 50 meters, and camouflages itself by attaching trash and sponges to its shell. This appearance is why it got the name "cotton dust." The carapace is a long, rounded rectangle, about 3 cm long. Its color ranges from gray to black-brown, reflecting where it lives. The stomach, heart, and gill regions are clearly separated, each covered with fine granules, and each granule has hook-shaped hairs. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
