Military operation

Japanese: 軍事作戦 - ぐんじさくせん

A general term for anti-enemy actions taken by military forces to accomplish assigned missions, including not only combat operations but also the associated intelligence (reconnaissance), maneuvers, camping, vigilance, and rear-area (supply, maintenance, medical, etc.) activities, and can be said to embody strategy and tactics. Usually, it is simply called "operation." In English, it is called "operation," but the meaning of operation is broader, including military service and education and training. Conventionally, "operation" is used for strategic units of divisions or above (units capable of independent combat operations for a certain period of time), and "combat" is used for units of regiments or below.

軍隊が与えられた任務を遂行するために行う対敵行動の総称で，戦闘行動だけでなく，これに付随する情報(偵察)，機動，宿営，警戒，後方(補給，整備，衛生等)の諸活動を含むものであって，戦略･戦術を具体化したものといえる。通常は単に〈作戦〉と称する。英語ではoperationであるが，operationの意味はさらに広く，このほかに軍務や教育訓練等をも包含している。また，慣例として〈作戦〉は，師団以上の戦略部隊(ある程度の期間，独立して戦闘行動を行う能力のある部隊)について使用し，連隊以下の部隊にあっては〈戦闘〉という。
