Wakou Illustrated Scroll - Wakou Zukan

Japanese: 倭寇図巻 - わこうずかん

A painting depicting the customs of Japanese pirates in the 16th century. Owned by the Historiographical Institute, University of Tokyo. Color on silk. 32cm tall, 522cm long. The original title is "Ming Qiu Ying's Ten Provinces Succumb to Taiwan," but the artist is not Qiu Ying (of the Ten Provinces), and the setting of the painting is not Taiwan. The style is that of 17th century Chinese Wu school literati painting. The painting begins with the appearance of a fleet of Japanese pirates, and unfolds in the following order: landing, observation of the situation, plundering, arson, close battle with Ming government soldiers, news of victory, and the Ming government soldiers setting out. In addition to depictions of people, there are many noteworthy depictions of guns, ships, weapons, etc.

16世紀の倭寇の風俗を描写した絵画。東京大学史料編纂所所蔵。絹本着色。縦32cm，全長522cm。原題は《明仇十州台湾奏凱図》とあるが，筆者は仇英(十州)ではなく，画面の舞台も台湾ではない。作風は17世紀中国の呉派文人画のものである。画面は，倭寇船団の出現にはじまり，上陸，形勢の観望，略奪，放火，明官兵との接戦，勝報，明官兵の出撃の順序で展開する。人物の描写のほか，鉄砲，船，武器等注目すべき描写が多い。
