Naganao Asano

A feudal lord in the early Edo period. His father was the third son of Asano Nagamasa and Nagashige, lord of Kasama Castle in Hitachi Province (Ibaraki Prefecture). In 1632, he inherited his father's estates, but in 1645, he was transferred to Ako County in Banshu (Hyogo Prefecture) and other areas with a fief of over 50,000 koku. When he took over the fief, there was no castle in Ako, but in 1648, he received permission from the shogunate and began building a castle. Also, at the urging of merchants from Osaka, he changed the salt fields along the coast from the previously raised salt fields to new-style salt fields, and continued to develop new fields. During the Asano clan's reign, the salt fields covered an area of 127 chobu (126 ha), and produced approximately 406,000 bales of salt (1 bale contains 5 to = 90 liters). Most of this was sold to Osaka, enriching the finances of the domain. During this period, many of the coastal salt fields that spread throughout the Setouchi region were modeled after the Ako salt fields.

江戸時代前期の大名。父は浅野長政の3男で常陸国(茨城県)笠間城城主長重。寛永9(1632)年父の遺領を継ぐが,正保2(1645)年播州(兵庫県)赤穂郡他5万余石に転封。入封時,赤穂には城郭の構えがなかったが,慶安1(1648)年幕府の許しを得て築城におよんでいる。また大坂の商人らの勧めで沿海部の塩浜を,それまでの揚浜から新式の入浜塩田に改め,さらに続々と新田を開発。塩田は浅野氏の時代中に127町歩(126ha)におよび,約40万6000俵(1俵が5斗=90リットル入り)の製塩をみる。これらのほとんどが大坂に販売されて藩の財政を潤した。この時代,瀬戸内に普及した入浜塩田の多くは赤穂塩田を範とした。
