Ekou - Ekou

Japanese:
Ekou - Ekou

In Buddhism, it means directing one's good deeds and merits gained through the cultivation of Buddhism to the enlightenment of all people. It is generally a translation of the Sanskrit word pariāmanā, and can also be written as eko. In Mahayana Buddhism, in order for the results of good deeds to lead to enlightenment (righteous awakening), it was emphasized that one should bestow merits on sentient beings and become Buddhas together. In Pure Land Buddhism in particular, it meant chanting the Nembutsu, thinking about the Pure Land, and praying for rebirth in the Pure Land. There are two types of eko: directing one's merits to others and praying for rebirth in the Pure Land together is called ousou eko, and returning to this world once born in the Pure Land to teach people and direct them to pray for the Pure Land is called genso eko. There are also passages in the scriptures which state that donations and other acts of dedication extend to one's deceased relatives and blood relatives, and it came to be said that the merit of holding Buddhist memorial services would bring peace to the deceased and lead them to the Buddhist path.
