2-methylenesuccinic acid. C 5 H 6 O 4 (130.10). An isomer of mesaconic acid and citraconic acid. A component of fungi such as Aspergillus terreus and Asp. itaconicus . For industrial purposes, it is produced by culturing the above fungi on sugarcane medium (itaconic acid fermentation). In the laboratory, itaconic anhydride (melting point 68 °C) and citraconic anhydride (melting point 7 °C) are obtained by distilling aconitic acid, and the former becomes itaconic acid when heated with water. It is a colorless, hygroscopic crystal with a peculiar odor. Melting point 162-164 °C (decomposition). It sublimes under reduced pressure. Its solubility in 100 g of water is 8.3 g (20 °C). K a1 1.4 × 10 -4 , K a2 3.56 × 10 -6 (25 °C). Soluble in ethanol, slightly soluble in benzene, chloroform, ether, etc. Used as a raw material for the synthesis of polyester resins and plasticizers. Itaconic acid diesters are used alone or copolymerized with other vinyl monomers for thermoplastic resins, ion exchange resins, synthetic fibers, etc. Store in a tightly sealed container. 2-methylenesuccinic acid.C5H6O4(130.10).
