Vaganova, Agrippina
Born June 26, 1879 in St. Petersburg, Russian Empire
[Died] November 5, 1951. Leningrad, Soviet Union. Dancer. Full name Agrippina Yakovlevna Vaganova. In 1897, she joined the Mariinsky Theatre Ballet Company, but was not awarded the title of ballerina until just before her retirement in 1917. After retiring, she started teaching at a ballet academy, and in 1921 she was transferred to the Petrograd State Choreographic School (later the Leningrad Imperial Choreographic School). After working as a teacher at the Kirov Ballet Company, she became the school's principal in 1934. She is famous as the founder and teacher of the Vaganova method, and her book "Vaganova's Ballet Lessons" (originally titled "The Foundations of Classical Dance", 1934) is considered the standard for modern ballet education. She trained Galina S. Ulanova, Marina T. Semenova, and others in Russia, and introduced Russian-style ballet to Europe and the United States through Harald Lander and others. In 1957, the Leningrad Imperial Choreographic School changed its name to the Vaganova Ballet Academy in honor of Vaganova's achievements.
