Japanese: 上中[町] - かみなか

This old town in Onyu District occupies the upper and middle reaches of the Kitagawa River, which flows into Obama Bay, in the southwest of Fukui Prefecture. In addition to rice, the town is also known for its cabbage, and livestock farming is also carried out. The Wakasa Highway runs through the Kitagawa River valley, and it has long been a route by which Kyoto culture was introduced to the Hokuriku region. The Obama Line runs through the town, and it is connected by bus to Imazu Town (now Takashima City) in Shiga Prefecture. There are many ancient tombs, including Nishizuka Tomb (historic site). In March 2005, it merged with Mikata Town, Mikata District, to become a town, forming Wakasa Town. It has an area of 82.08 ^km2 . Population: 8,213 (2003).
