This is a cycle of symphonic poems composed by Smetana from 1874 to 1879. It is based on the history and nature of the composer's native Czechoslovakia and consists of six pieces: Vyšehrad (High Castle) (1874), Vltava (Vltava) (1874), Šarka (1875), Z čeckých luhů a hájů (From the Bohemian Forests and Fields) (1875), Tábor (1878), and Blaník (1879). In 1848, the influence of the February Revolution in Paris and the March Revolution in Vienna reached Czechoslovakia, and fighting broke out between the Austrian government forces and the Prague citizen army. The young Smetana composed songs for the revolutionary citizens and participated in the fighting himself. It is thought that this patriotic passion was the driving force behind the later creation of this cycle. All six symphonic poems are supported by heavy and colorful orchestration and are colored by beautiful melodies, and the second piece in particular, "The Moldau," is widely loved. The complete set was premiered in Prague in 1882. [Yukio Miyake] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
