"Illustrated Guide to Strange Shells"

...Beginning with Fukane Sukehito's "Honsho Wamyo" (around 918), many more were published during the Edo period. Oe Ryuho's "Kaitsukushi Ura no Nishiki" (1749) and Matsuoka Gentatsu's "Igan Saikaihin" (1758) were published, and Kimura Kenkadou's "Kigai Zufu" (Illustrated Guide to Strange Shells) (1775) illustrated many deep-sea shells, including the red sea slug. This was 80 years before the discovery of the "living fossil" sea slug in the West Indies, which astonished the academic community, in 1855.
