In the medieval hexachord system, its use was gradually expanded by musica ficta, which could be considered the predecessor of accidentals, and in the Renaissance and Baroque, it was combined with the bold expression of lyrics, giving rise to the so-called chromaticism. A particularly extreme example is found in the Italian madrigals of the late Renaissance, the second half of the 16th century. …
