Additives added to soaps, synthetic surfactants, etc. to improve their cleaning properties, improve processing and storage properties, and also provide economic benefits as bulking agents. Builders themselves have almost no cleaning effect, but when used with detergents, they (1) maintain the pH of the wash solution, (2) prevent the hydrolysis of soap and turn fatty acids of dirt into soap, (3) dissolve metal oxides in acidic builders, (4) reduce the interfacial tension between the wash solution and oil, promoting the removal of oily dirt, (5) reduce the micelle formation concentration, promoting the formation of micelles in surfactants and improving their surface properties, (6) prevent the re-adhesion of dirt that has fallen off during the wash bath, and (7) soften hard water.

セッケン，合成界面活性剤などに，その洗浄性を向上させ，加工，保存性を改良し，かつ増量剤として経済的効果をも与えるものとして加える添加剤。ビルダー自体にはほとんど洗浄作用はないが，洗剤と共用することにより，(1)洗濯液のpHを維持し，(2)アルカリ性ビルダーではセッケンの加水分解を防ぎ，汚れの脂肪酸をセッケンとし，(3)酸性ビルダーでは金属酸化物を溶かし，(4)洗濯液‐油の界面張力を減少させ，油状汚れの脱離を促す，(5)ミセル形成濃度を低下させて，界面活性剤のミセル形成を促進し，またその表面特性を改善する，(6)洗浴中に脱落した汚れの再付着を防止する，(7)硬水を軟化する，などの役割をする。
