A fish of the genus Smelt in the family Osmeridae of the order Salmoniformes (illustration). In the San'in region, it is called Amasagi. It inhabits brackish waters and lakes from Kanto northward on the Pacific coast, and from Shimane Prefecture northward and Hokkaido southward on the Sea of Japan coast. There are purely freshwater, brackish, and anadromous species. Since the successful transplantation of artificially fertilized eggs from Hinuma, Ibaraki Prefecture, to Matsukawaura, Fukushima Prefecture in 1908, they have now been transplanted to lakes and ponds all over the country, including Lake Suwa, Lake Yamanaka, and Lake Ashi. It has the oily fins characteristic of Salmoniformes, a dark gray back, and silvery white sides, giving it a neat appearance. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
