Wakasa Sotomo

Japanese: 若狭蘇洞門 - わかさそとも

Also written as "sotomo" (outer surface). A nationally designated scenic spot in Obama City, Fukui Prefecture. The sea cliffs of Hanakoiwa stretch for 2km on the outer bay side of the Uchitomi Peninsula, which juts out to the east of Obama Bay, creating a striking contrast between the white rock surface and the blue sea. Hanakoiwa has been eroded by waves along its columnar joints, resulting in a series of strangely shaped rocks and bizarre stones, including the Daimon and Komon sea caves, Tofuneiwa, Shishiiwa, and Meoto Kameiwa. It is about an hour's ride by pleasure boat from Obama Port. This scenic spot is within Wakasa Bay Quasi-National Park, and is particularly popular with tourists in the summer. [Shimada Masahiko]

〈外面（そとも）〉とも書く。福井県小浜市にある国指定の名勝。小浜湾の東に突出する内外海（うちとみ）半島の外湾側に2kmにわたって展開する花コウ岩の海食崖で，白い岩肌と青い海の対照が鮮やかである。花コウ岩が柱状節理に沿って波の浸食をうけ，大門，小門の海食洞をはじめ，唐船岩，獅子岩，夫婦（めおと）亀岩など奇岩怪石が並ぶ。小浜港から遊覧船で約1時間。若狭湾国定公園中の景勝で，特に夏季は観光客でにぎわう。【島田正彦】
