1877‐1932 Russian poet. Born into an aristocratic family in Kiev, he studied painting in Paris for many years and was strongly influenced by French poetry and impressionist painting. He formed friendships with VI Ivanov and contributed to Symbolist magazines such as Vesy from Paris, but later he became closer to Acmeism and advocated a new realism (neo-realism) based on Symbolism. His style of poetry is characterized by a rigid, pictorial grandeur, with themes of nature and history. In addition to his published collections of poems, such as his first collection of poems, Psalms 1900-1910 (1910) and The Deaf and Mute Demon (1919), he also has many unpublished poems, as well as excellent translations of French poetry and watercolors of the landscapes of his home city of Crimea. V.I.
