Living Doll - Ikeru Ningyo

...Because this film is permeated with socialist ideology, which was considered a "dangerous idea" at the time, it was the first to be called an "ideological film" or a "tendency film." However, the term "tendency film" was not truly adopted by journalism until director Uchida Tomu's film "Living Doll" (1929), a film adaptation of a newspaper serial novel by proletarian writer Kataoka Teppei (1894-1944), became a hit. Uchida Tomu later reflected that the film's left-wing ideology was merely a formality that followed the trend of the times, but the film exposed the enormous mechanisms and cruelty of capitalist society by depicting the pitiful figure of an ambitious young man who came to Tokyo from the countryside and whose philosophy of life was calculating self-succession and career advancement, being toyed with like a living doll.
