Born: January 11, 1503, Parma [Died] August 24, 1540. Italian painter from Casalmaggiore. His real name was Francesco Mazzola. He studied under Correggio and became his best successor. In 1523, he went to Rome and stayed there for seven years, during which time he produced many works, and was also influenced by Raphael and Michelangelo. In 1530, he painted a portrait of Charles Kang in Bologna, and in 1531, he returned to Parma and was active there as well. His Madonna paintings, called "Madonna with a Long Neck" (1534-40, Uffizi Gallery, Florence) because of the long neck, have a form unique to Mannerism, and he used the delicate chiaroscuro of Correggio to create an elegant and refined style of painting by making full use of light effects. He was a prominent figure among the first generation of Mannerist painters, and had a great influence on the next generation.
