…A typical British government bond, originating from the consolidated annuities (abbreviated as Consols) that were established in 1751 by merging and refinancing nine existing bonds (see the entry on government bonds). The old Consols bore 3% interest, but in 1882 they were merged with two bonds issued in the 1840s to form the new Consols (also called Goschens) with an interest rate of 2.75% (2.5% from 1903). Since 1923, they have been redeemable with parliamentary approval, but the government saw no advantage in redeeming them at face value because of their low market value, and there was no need to refinance them because of the low interest rate, so they have continued to exist as a typical perpetual bond. …
