Japanese: コガネムシ(黄金虫∥金亀子) - コガネムシ

A general term for insects in the Scarabaeidae family of the beetle order, or one of these species. The scarab beetle Mimela splendens has a strong metallic luster on its back, 1 to 3 small vertical depressions in the center near the lateral edge on the back of the thorax, and a vertical row of small dots on the elytra. Body length is 17 to 23 mm. It is widely distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, as well as China, the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan, Myanmar, etc. Adults appear most often from June to July, and feed on the leaves of broad-leaved trees such as cherry blossoms and sawtooth oaks.
