A Chinese archaeologist renowned as the organizer and authority of oracle bone studies. Born in Nanyang County, Henan Province. Graduated from Peking University. He began excavating the Yin Ruins in 1928, and as a member of the Institute of History and Philology at Academia Sinica, he played a leading role in the excavation surveys, publishing major works such as "Inscriptions on the Yin Ruins" and "Calendar of the Yin Dynasty" based on the oracle bone fragments he excavated. In 1949, he moved to Taiwan with the Nationalist government, and later became director of the Institute of History and Philology and a professor at National Taiwan University. 甲骨学の組織者,権威として名高い中国の考古学者。河南省南陽県生れ。北京大学卒。1928年殷墟(いんきょ)の発掘を始め,以後中央研究院歴史語言研究所員としてその発掘調査に指導的役割を果たし,発掘した甲骨片をもとに《殷墟文字》《殷暦譜》などの大著を発表。その間,1949年には国民政府とともに台湾に移り,のち歴史語言研究所長,台湾大学教授に就任。
