Franz Weidenreich

German anatomist and anthropologist. He is especially known for his research on Peking Man (Homo erectus pekinensis) and human evolution. He studied medicine at the University of Strasbourg and became professor of anatomy at his alma mater in 1903. He mainly studied skeletal remains as well as primate evolution. He became professor at the University of Heidelberg in 1919 and was appointed professor of anthropology at the University of Frankfurt in 1928. In 1935, he was invited to become professor at the Union Medical College in Beijing as a successor to Davidson Black (1884-1934), who died while studying the Peking Man fossil, and there he energetically pursued research on Peking Man. In 1941, he moved to the American Museum of Natural History in New York, where he conducted research on Java Man, Solo Man, Gigantopithecus, and other species, making a significant contribution to the development of human evolution. He visited Japan four times in the late 1930s and gave special lectures.

ドイツの解剖学者、人類学者。とくに北京(ペキン)原人（ホモ・エレクトゥス・ペキネンシス）と人類進化の研究で有名。ストラスブール大学で医学を学び、1903年母校の解剖学教授となった。主として骨格の研究とともに霊長類進化の研究も行った。1919年ハイデルベルク大学教授となり、1928年にはフランクフルト大学の人類学教授に任ぜられた。1935年、北京原人化石の研究中に死亡したブラックDavidson Black（1884―1934）の後任として北京の協和医学院に教授として招かれ、精力的に北京原人の研究を進めた。1941年ニューヨークのアメリカ自然史博物館に移り、ジャワ原人、ソロ人、ギガントピテクスなどの研究を行い、人類進化学の発展に大きく貢献した。1930年代後半には4回にわたって来日し、特別講演を行った。
