German anatomist and anthropologist. He is especially known for his research on Peking Man (Homo erectus pekinensis) and human evolution. He studied medicine at the University of Strasbourg and became professor of anatomy at his alma mater in 1903. He mainly studied skeletal remains as well as primate evolution. He became professor at the University of Heidelberg in 1919 and was appointed professor of anthropology at the University of Frankfurt in 1928. In 1935, he was invited to become professor at the Union Medical College in Beijing as a successor to Davidson Black (1884-1934), who died while studying the Peking Man fossil, and there he energetically pursued research on Peking Man. In 1941, he moved to the American Museum of Natural History in New York, where he conducted research on Java Man, Solo Man, Gigantopithecus, and other species, making a significant contribution to the development of human evolution.
