The heroine of Ibsen's controversial play A Doll's House (1879). In Japan she is called Nora, but her original pronunciation is Nora. She leaves her husband and three children behind, saying that she is a human being before she is a wife and mother, and is considered a symbolic figure of women's liberation, and the merits and demerits of her actions have been fiercely debated around the world. Apparently, a salon in Northern Europe even had a sign posted saying "No discussion of A Doll's House." At the German premiere, the leading actress refused to include a scene in which she abandons her child, so Ibsen was forced to rewrite the ending so that she stops running away after seeing her child's sleeping face, but he himself called this an "act of barbarism."
