A haiku poet from the mid-Edo period. Nakagawa. Commonly known as Kiemon. Also known as Bakurinsha. Born in Kawasaki, Ise Province (Mie Prefecture). A lumber merchant, he later became a priest at the Ise Shrine and was called Keitokuzusho. He was a disciple of Basho in his later years, but learned haiku mainly from Iwata Ryoto, the founder of the Ise school, and after his teacher's death, he became the center of the Ise haiku world, and expanded his influence widely, including to the Hokuriku region, with his style of writing (Bakurin-style), which was simple, light-hearted, and intellectual, and easy to listen to. In later generations, the haiku style of his school was sometimes criticized as Shimakucho, along with Shiko's Mino style. This morning, the floating grass is blooming on the other bank.
